John Dichtl became AASLH President & CEO in 2015. Prior to that he was the executive director of the National Council on Public History (NCPH) for nine years, and worked for the Organization of American Historians for fourteen years as deputy director and in several other roles. John received his MA and PhD in early American history from Indiana University, and from 2006 to 2015 was an adjunct faculty member of the history department at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Before graduate school he worked for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. He is a 2004 graduate of the Seminar for Historical Administration, a program that stems from an AASLH partnership with the Indiana Historical Society and other organizations. John helped to found the History Relevance Campaign, the International Federation for Public History, and is active in the National Coalition for History.

Bethany Hawkins was named Chief of Operations for AASLH in April 2016. She joined AASLH in 2005 in the role of Program Manager working primarily with the association’s continuing education programs, annual meeting, awards program, and affinity groups. Before joining AASLH, she worked as Director of Marketing for the Lane Motor Museum in Nashville and was Executive Director of the Sam Davis Home and Museum in Smyrna, TN. A life-long Tennessee resident, Bethany has both a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Master of Arts in Public History from Middle Tennessee State University.

Bethany Hawkins

Chief of Operations



Aja Bain is the Program and Publications Coordinator. She has been with AASLH since 2014 and holds a BA in American history and anthropology from Vanderbilt University and an MA in Public History from Middle Tennessee State University. Her research interests include migration, Southern history, and material culture. Aja serves as President of the Inter-Museum Council of Nashville and writes for Historic Nashville, Inc. When not at AASLH, she can be found leading tours of downtown Nashville and the Parthenon museum. Previous affiliations include the Kentucky Historical Society and Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage.

Aja Bain

Program and Publications Coordinator



Prior to joining AASLH, Cherie Cook worked with museums in Oklahoma for more than sixteen years, first as field services coordinator and then as executive director of the Oklahoma Museums Association. As a result of her work, OMA became one of the most active state museum associations in the nation. Much of Cherie’s work at AASLH focuses on smaller history organizations and is influenced not only by her years in Oklahoma but also her experience as a county historical society curator and one glorious summer spent as a historic site interpreter. Cherie holds an MA in Historical Administration from Eastern Illinois University and a BA in History from Kansas State University. She has authored seven technical bulletins and edited both the StEPs program workbook and The Source: A Museum Reference Manual, an 800-page guide produced for museums in Oklahoma.

Cherie Cook

Senior Program Manager



Natalie Flammia is a creative bluestocking who enjoys collaborating with people of positive purpose. She holds a Masters of Library and Information Science with a concentration in Archives Management from Simmons College and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Spanish from Wake Forest University. Natalie has worked as an archivist for several private collections and was an intern at the Country Music Hall of Fame. In addition to her work as an information professional, Natalie has supported several for-profit companies as Operations Manager, overseeing daily operations, programming, and development of the businesses at large. She has found her purpose in helping connect the dots between people, projects, and ideas.  In her free time, you will find Natalie on a hike with her dog, enjoying Nashville’s restaurant scene, or buried in a new (or old) book. She is a proud New Yorker, but is slowly being won over by Nashville’s warm community and weather.

Darah is a native of Montana and a recent transplant to Nashville, TN. She holds a BA in Communications, with an emphasis in Organizational Communication, as well as an MBA from the University of Montana. Prior to joining AASLH, Darah’s experience involved working in marketing and communications for several non-profits and small businesses. She is passionate about harnessing the power of storytelling to create meaningful relationships between organizations and those they serve. In addition to being a unabashed history nerd, she also enjoys coffee, crosswords and walking tours (in that order).

Terry Jackson has served as the Membership and Database Coordinator since August 2014. She began her work with AASLH in 2006 as the Grant Coordinator for the IMLS Connecting to Collections Bookshelf program. She has worked on long-term projects in multiple areas at AASLH, most recently undertaking the conversion of the Membership Database to a new software in March 2015. As a native of Nashville, Terry worked in the financial field for many years. Terry went back to school and received her BA in History with a Southern Culture minor in 2003. She has also taken MTSU’s Masters classes in Public History. She has worked in a small house museum, the local county archive, has volunteered with a local cemetery friends group, the Tennessee Portrait Project, and is currently a volunteer tutor at a local elementary school’s reading clinic.

Membership and Database Coordinator



John Garrison Marks joined AASLH as External Relations Coordinator in 2017. John helps to coordinate AASLH’s work with external partners, including the History Relevance Campaign, humanities advocacy efforts, and other major projects. Prior to joining AASLH, John served as Program Coordinator for Saving Hallowed Ground, a public history non-profit organization in Pennsylvania. A historian of race and slavery in the Atlantic World, John earned his Ph.D. in History from Rice University in 2016. He received his M.A. in History from Rice University in 2012 and a B.A. in History and Spanish, with a minor in Museum Studies, from Lynchburg College in 2010. He is the author of scholarly articles in Atlantic Studies and Southwestern Historical Quarterly, and he is the co-editor of Race and Nation in the Age of Emancipations: An Atlantic World Anthology, forthcoming in 2018 from University of Georgia Press. He is a native of New Jersey.
